Iraq reaffirms commitment to Lebanon as new government is formed

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani extended congratulatory messages to Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam following the formation of their new government.

Al-Sudani expressed his congratulations on behalf of Iraq’s government and people, recognizing the milestone as a step toward “a new era of stability and security” for Lebanon.

Lebanon has formed a new government under Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, marking the country’s first full administration since 2022. The 24-member cabinet, announced on Feb. 8, aims to implement financial reforms, oversee reconstruction efforts and enforce a resolution to stabilize the Lebanese border with Israel.

Confirming the bonds of brotherhood and the distinguished relations between Iraq and Lebanon, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani sent two congratulatory messages to His Excellency the President of the Lebanese Republic, Joseph Aoun, and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. In these messages, he expressed, on behalf of Iraq—its government and people—sincere congratulations to brotherly Lebanon, its governmental institutions, and its honorable people on the completion of the new Lebanese government formation. He wished that this step would mark the beginning of a new era of stability and security and a confident gateway to achieving the aspirations of the Lebanese people for prosperity and a dignified life.

In his congratulatory messages, Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s continued support for the Lebanese people and its commitment to providing all possible assistance to strengthen this dear country’s resilience against challenges, contribute to reconstruction and prosperity, and uphold Lebanon’s long-standing role in the region. He emphasized Lebanon’s pivotal role in fostering development and reinforcing economic and cultural integration among our brotherly and friendly nations.
