Sudani Orders Probe Into Suicide Drone Attack on Khor Mor Gas Field

Iraqi PM orders ‘probe’ into suicide drone attack on Khor Mor gas field
SULAYMANIYAH — Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has ordered a “technical security committee” to investigate a suicide drone attack on the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaymaniyah governorate on Sunday night. The attack caused a minor fire near a fuel tank but did not result in casualties or damage to infrastructure, and production was unaffected.
The Security Media Cell, the government’s official source for military and security developments, said Al-Sudani “has been following developments regarding the incident, which occurred on Sunday at the Khor Mor field inside Dana Gas facilities in Qadir Karam, Sulaymaniyah governorate.” It confirmed that a drone targeted the site, sparking a small fire near a fuel tank, but stressed that “there were no human or material losses, and production at the field continued uninterrupted.”
The Joint Operations Command remained in close coordination with Peshmerga commanders in Sulaymaniyah and neighboring areas “to fully assess the situation,” it said.
“We affirm that any attempt to damage the country’s economy and harm the livelihood and interests of the people is an act that targets all Iraqis,” it said. “Our security forces will not allow this and will track all details of the incident. They are fully capable of suppressing such cheap attempts and bringing those who seek to tamper with the country’s economic security to justice.”
The Kurdistan Region’s General Directorate of Counter-Terrorism in Sulaymaniyah said the attack took place at 07.05 p.m. and that “a suicide drone targeted the Khor Mor gas field.” It said intelligence indicated “the drone was launched from the Bashir area [in Kirkuk] and was carried out by militia groups operating outside the law.” “There were no human or material losses, and the field, along with Dana Gas facilities, remained fully protected,” it added.
The Khor Mor gas field, operated by UAE-based Dana Gas, is a critical energy asset in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. As of 2024, the field produces over 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, supplying power stations in Chemchemal, Bazian, and Erbil. This output generates more than 2,000 megawatts of electricity, accounting for approximately 70% of the region’s power supply.
In recent years, the Khor Mor gas field has been the target of multiple attacks. In April 2024, a drone strike resulted in the deaths of four Yemeni workers and significant damage to the facility. The Kurdistan Regional Government condemned the incident as a “terrorist” attack and accused militia groups operating outside the law of responsibility. In January 2024, two Katyushas targeted the gas field, causing a blaze but no casualties.
The KRG’s Ministry of Natural Resources said in a statement that the attack caused no damage to the Khor Mor gas field or Dana Gas facilities. “Gas production at Khor Mor remains stable, and the supply to power generation plants continues without disruption,” it said. An assessment is underway to determine any potential material damage.
