Iraqi National Security Service warns Babil residents against phishing calls
BABIL — The National Security Service in Babil issued a warning Tuesday, urging residents to avoid responding to phone calls or messages requesting personal or confidential information under false pretenses, including loan applications, salary discrepancies, travel dollar sales, or contest participation.
“Dear residents of Babil Governorate, we urge you not to answer calls or messages requesting personal or confidential information under claims that you have applied for a loan, have financial discrepancies due to promotions or bonuses, are being offered travel dollars, or have won a contest. These are fraudulent tactics used to gain access to your bank account or online accounts by obtaining sensitive information such as OTP codes or verification codes,” the agency said in a statement.
Authorities advised residents to enable two-factor authentication on all online accounts and to avoid interacting with suspicious numbers or entities requesting private details. Those affected or in need of assistance are urged to contact the free hotline at 131.
Fraudsters frequently impersonate banks, government agencies, or service providers, tricking victims into revealing sensitive data such as bank account details, OTP verification codes, or passwords. Once obtained, this information can be used for unauthorized transactions, identity theft, or access to personal accounts.
