Garmian court sentences two to death for killing young man in Kalar
GARMIAN — The Garmian-Kirkuk Court of Appeal sentenced two individuals to death Monday for the murder of a 21-year-old man from Kalar, Sulaymaniyah’s Garmian Administration.
The incident took place on New Year’s Eve, when the victim was killed by two friends who turned themselves in the following day. Ali Jamal Qadouri, spokesperson for Garmian Police, told 964media, “The two friends, aged between 20 and 21, turned themselves in to security forces after realizing their involvement had been discovered. They confessed to killing their friend.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects committed the murder to seize their friend’s vehicle. They subsequently transported the car out of Kalar and left it at a workshop, intending to alter its color and appearance before selling it.
The victim’s family welcomed the court’s decision. A relative told 964media, “We hope the sentence will be carried out to bring this matter to a conclusion.”
As of Dec. 2024, 479 inmates in the Kurdistan Region have been sentenced to death. However, since 2008, Kurdish authorities have maintained a de facto moratorium on executions, suspending the death penalty except in cases involving terrorism or exceptionally severe crimes.
