Earthquake reported in Diyala governorate is felt as far as Kirkuk, Sulaymaniyah
DIYALA — An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck 22 kilometers south of Khanaqin in Diyala Governorate early Monday morning, according to the Iraqi Meteorological Organization and Seismology Department. The quake occurred at 4:02 a.m. local time and had a depth of 10 kilometers.
Residents in Diyala and neighboring governorates, including parts of Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah, reported feeling the tremor. Despite the early hour and the noticeable shaking, no damage or casualties have been reported.
CCTV footage shared with 964media captured the earthquake’s impact in Kalar city, showing items falling off shelves at a local budget market. The video highlights the brief but unsettling disturbance experienced by shoppers and vendors alike.
Mohammed Kamal, a meteorologist and seismologist, stated that three aftershocks followed the initial quake, hitting the Garmian administrative area with Kalar as its central city in Sulaymaniyah Governorate. These aftershocks ranged in magnitude from 2.8 to 3.1.
Social media activity at the time revealed that the initial quake disrupted the sleep of some residents in the affected areas, reflecting the earthquake’s sudden and unexpected nature.
