Young man killed in Baghdad attack while defending sister-in-law from verbal harassment, family say
BAGHDAD — A young man was killed in Amiriya, Baghdad, after being attacked by a group of more than 10 people while defending his sister-in-law from verbal harassment, according to family members.
Ahmed Al-Akidi was fatally stabbed and struck with a shovel after intervening to protect his sister-in-law from the assailants. The attackers, armed with knives and light weapons, called for reinforcements before killing Ahmed, his family members told 964 Media.
“God have mercy on him. They killed him in cold blood, stabbed him twice, and struck his head with a shovel. My brother’s case speaks for itself,” said Ayman Al-Akidi, the victim’s brother.
Security forces have arrested four suspects, including the brother of the main assailant, but the primary suspect remains at large.
“They are a reckless, organized gang of 12 people, including three armed with pistols and others with knives. They are out of control,” said Abdul Karim, a relative of the victim.
Walid Khalid, a tribal elder from the Al-Bu Ailan clan, explained that Ahmed’s brother and his wife were visiting a relative when one of the suspects, described as being involved in drugs, harassed the wife with vulgar language. Moments later, the group attacked Ahmed, killing him and mutilating his body.
“This is unacceptable, especially in Amiriya, a demilitarized area unaccustomed to such violence,” Khalid said.
The victim’s family is demanding swift justice and has urged Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari to intervene personally to ensure all suspects are arrested and held accountable.
