Two police officers killed in Najaf arson suspect arrest

NAJAF — Two police officers were killed and two others were injured during an operation to arrest a suspect accused of multiple counts of vehicle arson in northern Najaf, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced.

The ministry detailed that the operation, conducted by officers and personnel from the Al-Nasr Police Department, followed “accurate intelligence” regarding the suspect’s involvement in setting citizens’ vehicles on fire in residential neighborhoods. After gathering information and setting up ambushes, police identified the suspect, who was pursued and apprehended.

The ministry confirmed that Maj. Marwan Taklif Jassim and Contract Officer Raheem Hatem Raheem were killed in the line of duty. A lieutenant and a warrant officer sustained injuries during the operation.

The suspect has been detained.

“The Ministry of Interior remains committed to ensuring public safety and taking decisive action against anyone who threatens the security of citizens,” the statement said.
