Tourist dies in Soran Independent Administration after falling from cliff

SORAN — A tourist lost his life after falling from a steep cliff in the Soran Independent Administration, located in the Erbil governorate, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

The incident occurred around six a.m. in a mountainous area near Khalifan-Bekhal Road with an elevation of approximately 350 meters.

Karwan Mirawdali, head of Soran Civil Defense, stated that the tourist was of Arab nationality and succumbed to severe injuries caused by the fall. “The location is extremely difficult to access, and recovering the body requires considerable time and effort,” he said.

Authorities were notified about the incident early Tuesday morning through an emergency call reporting a tourist had fallen while accompanied by two others.

Mirawdali added that four rescue teams are currently working to retrieve the body.

The tourist was reportedly traveling with two companions, and other family members were also present in the area.

On Jan 2, a 45-year-old man died after falling from Mount Zozik in the Soran Independent Administration. Despite efforts by Soran Civil Defense teams, the man succumbed to his injuries before evacuation.

Soran is a picturesque mountainous destination renowned for its stunning landscapes, rugged peaks, and natural beauty. This region attracts thousands of tourists year-round, particularly from Iraq’s southern Arab governorates, seeking a retreat from the summer heat or to enjoy winter snow-capped mountains.
