2,000 saplings planted in Chamchamal to restore greenery along key highway

CHAMCHAMAL — Efforts to plant trees along the Sulaymaniyah-Kirkuk highway within Chamchamal district are nearing completion. In the final phase on Tuesday, local teams focused on replanting trees in areas where earlier plantations had dried up, primarily due to traffic incidents.

Many of the previously planted saplings along the road had withered, but fresh saplings have been planted in those areas as part of this environmental initiative.

Hemin Jaafar, head of Chamchamal’s Parks Department, told 964media that the tree-planting campaign, supported by the Aynda Organization for Environmental Protection, spanned two phases and involved planting more than 2,000 saplings.

“This campaign aims to further green and organize of the Sulaymaniyah-Kirkuk highway within Chamchamal’s jurisdiction,” Jaafar explained.

The planted saplings include a variety species, such as eucalyptus and pine trees, selected for their suitability to the region’s climate.

“For over 12 years, the road between Takiya and Chamchamal has also been planted with trees, and this initiative will further enhance the green coverage across Chamchamal district,” Jaafar added.

Bahroz Salar, Director of Sulaymaniyah Parks, previously told 964media, “We are actively gathering data on Sulaymaniyah’s green space coverage, and we are very close to meeting international standards, with the city currently achieving approximately 19.5% green coverage.”
