Iraqi visual artist Mazin Ahmed returns to Baghdad with second art exhibition on the human experience
BAGHDAD — Iraqi visual artist Mazin Ahmed, has returned to Baghdad to host his second art exhibition in Iraq, having lived in Australia since 2002. The event, held at The Gallery center in Karrada area on Tuesday, will run until January 15, 2025, showcasing a collection of paintings that delve into the human experience.
In an interview with 964media, Mazin expressed his enthusiasm, “I had a strong desire to hold this exhibition, my second in Iraq, as my last solo exhibition in Baghdad was in 2017.”
He continued, “The artworks in this exhibition tell stories and experiences that humans go through. One piece, titled “Closed Doors,” reflects the dreams and goals we all aspire to achieve, encouraging perseverance despite obstacles. Another piece focuses on postage stamps, with the envelope symbolizing a return to the past—when we used to affix stamps to envelopes and write letters by hand.”
Throughout his artistic journey, Mazin, born in 1964 in Baghdad, has held over 13 solo exhibitions across the world, with notable contributions in Australia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Jordan, and Italy.
His artistic contributions in Sydney include mosaic murals displayed prominently across streets and public squares.
Visitors to the exhibition have expressed their appreciation for Mazin’s contributions.
Mariam Mohammed, one of the attendees, told 964media, “We are truly happy to see talented Iraqi artists returning to Baghdad. The city is improving day by day, as evidenced by its selection as the Arab Tourism Capital. Baghdad is once again embracing those who were once distant, and we hope this spirit of joy and creativity continues.”
The Arab Tourism Organization announced on Dec. 10 that Baghdad has been selected as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2025. The city earned this title after fulfilling a set of criteria aimed at showcasing its tourism potential and infrastructure.
