Syrian Kurd injured in Turkish shelling amid ongoing clashes in Amedi
AMEDI — A Syrian Kurdish worker at a concrete and asphalt factory was injured on Tuesday evening, during Turkish bombardment in the village of Sargale, located within Duhok’s Amedi district.
A security source from the Amedi district told 964media, “The worker, originally from Western Kurdistan [Syria’s Kurdish regions], was injured during the shelling and the ongoing conflict between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, and has been transferred to Amedi hospital for treatment.”
The source added that the injured worker worked as a “chef and guard” at the factory and is married.
Masoud Boti, Deputy Director of Amedi Health Directorate, confirmed to 964media that the worker, aged 35, is currently receiving medical treatment after sustaining a shrapnel injury to his left foot.
In recent days, clashes and shelling have continued in the various areas of Amedi district, causing ongoing security concerns and disruptions in the region.
The Turkish military regularly carries out airstrikes in the Kurdistan Region, claiming to target alleged positions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party. The PKK, an armed Kurdish group, has been in conflict with the Turkish state over Kurdish rights since the early 1980s.
A report published on August by the Community Peacemaker Teams, an U.S.-based human rights organization, detailed the human impact of ongoing regional military operations in the Kurdistan Region. According to the report, 425 civilians have been killed and 420 injured in the Kurdistan Region since 1991, with over 83% of these casualties linked to Turkish military actions. The report highlighted a big uptick in such incidents since 2018.
The latest data from CPT reveals that Turkish military airstrikes and artillery shelling in Kurdistan Region have forced residents to evacuate 10 villages this year alone, raising the total number of abandoned villages to 170. The continued attacks have also caused 18 civilian deaths and left four others injured in the affected areas.
