Erbil authorities crack down on unlicensed phone and internet lines

ERBIL, October 5 — Erbil authorities carried out a campaign on Wednesday to confiscate unlicensed and undocumented phone and internet lines in an effort to reduce cases of extortion, according to a statement by the governorate.

The statement, received by 964, said:

Under the direction of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and a decision by the Council of Ministers, a campaign was launched to collect unlicensed and undocumented phone and internet lines being sold in the market, with the aim of reducing problems caused by these phone lines, especially social issues, extortion, and security problems.

The campaign is being carried out in Erbil under the supervision of Erbil Governor Nabaz Abdul Hamid and will continue in the rest of the Kurdistan region’s governorates.”
