'With our family’s support and self-reliance'

Sisters open first women-owned cosmetics shop in Souq Al-Shuyukh

DHI QAR — In the Souq Al-Shuyukh district, southern Dhi Qar governorate, two sisters have opened “Zanosh Cosmetics,” marking the first shop in the area owned and operated entirely by women. Unlike other stores, often owned by men but managed by women, this venture stands out as a symbol of female entrepreneurship in the region.

Despite initial concerns about working in the local market, Zainab and Khadija Abdul-Ali launched their small business, quickly attracting attention for offering imported, high-quality products not available even in Nasiriyah, the provincial capital.

Zainab told 964media that their journey began with online marketing before opening a small shop in the Al-Madaris Street area. Thanks to their parents’ direct support, they later relocated to Al-Mujamaa’t Street in the Ismailiyah area.

“My sister and I thought of starting our own business in Souq Al-Shuyukh, aiming to make it stand out from other projects by offering imported goods from outside Iraq, including global brands of gifts, perfumes, incense, and cosmetics,” Zainab told 964media

“I encourage girls not to wait for formal employment and to think about starting their own projects. With our family’s support and self-reliance, we were able to succeed, and we aim to continue developing our work,” she added.

Khadija also spoke to 964media, stating that their early success came from promoting their products through social media. “We worked hard to bring original products from the Gulf states, which were not available in Nasiriyah. We also provide natural flowers and decorations for events held in homes and schools,” she said.

The sisters have expanded their services to include delivery to other provinces and consult with medical professionals to ensure skincare and hair products meet client needs.
