In second Najaf visit
UN’s Mohammed Hassan highlights Al-Sistani’s commitment to Iraq’s stability
NAJAF — The United Nations special representative for Iraq, Mohammed Hassan, reaffirmed the commitment of Iraq’s top Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, to safeguarding Iraq from regional tensions and ensuring its stability. Hassan made the remarks on Thursday during a press conference in Najaf, following his meeting with Mohammad Reza Al-Sistani, son of the Grand Ayatollah.
“This is my second visit to this city, which holds a special place in the hearts of all Muslims,” Hassan stated. He emphasized that the meeting with Mohammad Reza al-Sistani is part of ongoing collaboration between the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq and Iraqi stakeholders to address key challenges facing the nation.
Hassan commended Ayatollah Al-Sistani’s efforts, conveyed through his son, to prioritize Iraq’s stability and shield it from external influences. “We hold great respect for Ayatollah Sistani and his continued dedication to Iraq’s security and unity,” he said, adding that the meeting also reflected on key topics discussed during their first engagement.
Hassan noted that the discussion included updates on recent meetings in the United States concerning Iraq, as well as strategies to prevent Iraq from becoming entangled in regional or international conflicts. “The religious authority has been briefed on these developments, and we explored ways to protect Iraq from harmful tensions,” he said.
The envoy highlighted Ayatollah Al-Sistani’s concern over the escalating crisis in the region, particularly the situation in Syria. “The region remains volatile, but we trust Iraq’s leadership to navigate these challenges effectively,” Hassan said, expressing confidence in Iraq’s ability to rise above its past difficulties and foster national reconciliation and progress.
Hassan reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s sovereignty and interests. “Iraq must not become a battleground for external agendas,” he stated, emphasizing that “the ultimate goal is Iraq’s stability and a brighter future for all its people.”
In discussions with Mohammad Reza al-Sistani, Hassan said they also addressed ensuring protections for minorities in Syria and the importance of holding criminals accountable through legal channels. He highlighted the need to protect Iraq from being exploited for regional disputes.
“We expect positive developments in the coming days that will contribute to Iraq’s stability and its role in the region,” Hassan concluded, expressing hope that Iraq’s historical significance and leadership will guide it toward overcoming challenges and achieving long-term peace and development.
On Nov. 4, 2024, UN Special Representative Mohammed Hassan met Al-Sistani in Najaf, where they addressed Iraq’s challenges and the UN’s supportive role. During that meeting, Ayatollah Al-Sistani emphasized the importance of preventing foreign interference, upholding the rule of law, ensuring state monopoly over weapons, and combating corruption.
