Autumn picnics in Ghammas, a weekend tradition amid lush green fields
DIWANIYAH — With the arrival of cooler weather, the youth of Ghammas, Diwaniyah, have embraced a cherished tradition: weekend picnics, known locally as kashtat. These group outings feature barbecues in the lush countryside, particularly near the scenic villages of the area.
After enduring the harsh summer heat, locals relish the warmth of the autumn sun while surrounded by verdant wheat fields marking the start of the planting season. Popular picnic meals include freshly grilled fish, chicken, or red meat, complemented by winter fruits and Iraqi tea brewed over coal.
Zaid Talal, a Ghammas resident, shared the appeal of these outings with 964media. “Today we came to Abu Blama village to grill fish in the open air. These picnics are special in autumn, particularly on weekends and during leisure time,” Talal said.
He added that summer outings are less common due to extreme heat, whereas autumn allows families and friends to gather and enjoy the beautiful agricultural landscapes.
Moamal Diab, another resident, described the charm of Ghammas’s rural areas.
“These are beautiful countryside spots, and most young people come here on Fridays and Saturdays,” Diab said. “This time of year, is especially stunning with the start of wheat planting season, as the land becomes a sea of lush green fields.”
Diab highlighted the meticulous preparation for these trips. “We bring grilling equipment to cook fish, chicken, or red meat, along with everything else needed for a perfect picnic,” he added.
