Arrests related to 'illegal leak of footage'

Basra police deny on arrest of officers who caught suspect in professor’s murder

BASRA — The Basra Police Command on Wednesday denied reports claiming the arrest of the team responsible for apprehending the suspect in the murder of a university professor. It said that the arrested officers were involved in the illegal leak of photos and videos related to the case.

On Nov. 26, the body of university professor Sarah Al-Aboudi was discovered in a remote area between Abu Al-Khasib and Al-Seeba, south of Basra. Investigations revealed that she was murdered by a trusted family acquaintance and colleague. The suspect was apprehended within 12 hours of the crime, and the weapon used was recovered.

Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani confirmed that the suspect is his brother-in-law but insisted that the investigation would remain impartial.

“The Basra Crime Control Unit conducted a swift and efficient operation, arresting the suspect in a record time of under 12 hours. The weapon used in the crime was seized, and all necessary legal actions have been initiated. The Minister of Interior commended the exceptional efforts of the team and awarded them a formal letter of recognition for their prompt and skilled response.”

The police clarified that the officers detained were not part of the team that executed the arrest but were implicated in the unauthorized dissemination of sensitive material. “The detained officers are being held accountable for leaking photos and videos in violation of protocol. A thorough investigation is underway, and appropriate legal action will be taken,” the statement read.

Additionally, the police noted that a delegation from the Human Rights Committee in Basra had inspected the detention conditions of the suspect, debunking allegations of mistreatment.

The Basra Police Command also announced plans to file legal suits against individuals who spread false accusations or attempted to tarnish the reputation of security forces. “We will take legal measures against those promoting baseless rumors or engaging in campaigns to undermine public trust in law enforcement,” the statement said.

The Basra Police reaffirmed their commitment to transparency, emphasizing that their actions are free from political influence and solely aimed at serving the citizens and maintaining public safety.
