'The law applies to everyone'

Basra governor’s brother-in-law arrested in connection university professor’s murder

BASRA — Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani confirmed on Wednesday that the suspect in the killing of a woman in Abu Al-Khasib is his brother-in-law, emphasizing that the law applies to everyone without exception.

“The security forces and I were not swayed by emotions; we closely followed the murder incident that occurred between Abu Al-Khasib and Al-Siba,” Al-Eidani stated. “The suspect in the killing of the university professor is my children’s uncle. While others might be affected due to the familial connection, he remains a suspect in the eyes of the law and was arrested following a judicial order.”

Al-Eidani praised the professionalism of the security forces, noting, “They performed their duties with utmost professionalism, apprehended the perpetrator, conducted the investigation, and submitted the case files to the competent judge.”

He further remarked, “Arresting the suspect, despite the personal familial ties, is the correct step towards establishing the rule of law over everyone.” Al-Eidani concluded by asserting, “The law applies to everyone, even if the suspect is the governor’s brother-in-law. We managed to arrest the suspect within 12 hours of committing the crime.”

On Nov. 26, security forces discovered the body of a female professor from the College of Physical Education at the University of Basra in Abu Al-Khasib, south of the city center. The suspect is a colleague at the same college.
