Karbala mandates paper bags for food establishments

KARBALA — Food establishments in Karbala are now required to replace plastic bags with paper alternatives under a new regulation approved by the Environmental Protection and Improvement Council. Governor Nassif Al-Khattabi announced the decision during a council meeting on Wednesday, part of a series of measures aimed at reducing pollution and enhancing the province’s environmental standards.

The council also unveiled plans to establish a waste recycling facility, conduct ongoing river dredging, and revive the stray dog control committee in collaboration with Karbala Police.

Hamed Obaid Abdullah, Director of Karbala’s Environment Department, emphasized the initiative’s role in addressing environmental challenges. “The meeting discussed environmental topics proposed according to environmental standards and objectives to improve Karbala’s environment and reduce pollution,” Abdullah told 964media.

Among the issues raised were the growing number of waste collection sites, elevated water levels in drainage channels, and the effects of last year’s water scarcity on the province.

The shift to paper bags aligns with health concerns about the potential harms of plastic, which were underscored during the council’s discussions. Abdullah noted the long-term benefits of reducing plastic use, calling it a step forward in improving environmental and public health outcomes for Karbala.
