38,000 tons expected this year

Olive production surges in Duhok with record-breaking yields

DUHOK — Olive production in Duhok has risen significantly this year, with local farmers expanding cultivation due to favorable soil and climate conditions, according to Ahmed Jameel, head of agriculture in the province.

Over 3,459 acres of land in Duhok, including areas in Akre, Shekhan, Semel, and central Duhok, are now planted with olive trees. This marks an increase from last year’s 3,255 acres, reflecting growing interest in the crop.

Jameel stated that olive production in Duhok is projected to exceed 38,000 tons by the end of the season, compared to 23,000 tons last year. “The demand for locally produced olives in the Duhok market has also increased, with prices ranging between 1,500 and 2,000 IQD ($1 to $1.3) per kilogram,” Jameel explained.

Duhok is known for its diverse agricultural production, with efforts underway to enhance local output and reduce dependence on imports. Plans include establishing a 5,000-square-meter facility dedicated to gathering and marketing locally cultivated products.

Beyond olives, this year’s cultivated areas in the province include 2,678 acres of tomatoes, 2,209 acres of cucumbers, 320 acres of eggplants, 9,225 acres of potatoes, 3,143 acres of muskmelons, 1,508 acres of watermelons, and 2,163 acres of onions.

As of early October, Duhok Governorate has exported approximately 225,000 tons of agricultural products to central and southern Iraq, with potatoes, tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers being the most in-demand items.
