Suspect arrested in killing of federal police commander in Baghdad’s Nahrawan district

BAGHDAD — Iraqi security forces arrested a suspect on Wednesday in connection with the killing of Federal Police Lt. Col. Ahmed Younis Ubaid in Baghdad’s southeastern Nahrawan district, a security source confirmed to 964media.

The source stated, “A security force apprehended the suspect, who admitted to firing a Kalashnikov at the Federal Police units.” The individual has been transferred to the Nahrawan Criminal Investigations unit for further questioning. Security forces are continuing their search for additional suspects involved in the incident.

Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari attended Lt. Col. Ubaid’s funeral earlier on Wednesday, paying tribute to the fallen commander, who was killed in the line of duty while attempting to apprehend a murder suspect in Nahrawan.

In a statement dated Oct. 5, 2024, the Interior Ministry described Ubaid’s death: “The heroic commander of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Brigade in the 1st Division of the Federal Police, Lt. Col. Ahmed Younis Ubaid, was martyred while executing an arrest warrant under Article 406 (murder) in Baghdad’s Nahrawan area.”

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify and apprehend additional individuals linked to the murder.
