Former Kuwaiti MP urges caution in media coverage of Kuwait-Iraq dispute

BASRA, September 25 — Academic and former Kuwaiti MP Abdullah Al-Nafisi called on Kuwaiti newspapers on Monday to exercise discipline in their coverage of the Khawr Abd Allah dispute with Iraq, and avoid an escalation reminiscient of 1990.

Al-Nafisi emphasized the need to handle the dispute with utmost caution in a post to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“The ongoing dispute between Iraq and Kuwait over the Khawr Abd Allah agreement should be managed with extreme care to prevent unfavorable outcomes, similar to what occurred in 1990. The most crucial point is to avoid media escalation and ensure that newspapers address the issue in a balanced manner, steering clear of sensationalism,” he wrote.
