South Korea tie looms

Iraq cuts working hours to support national team in today’s crucial World Cup qualifier

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has directed the early end of official working hours on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. to allow citizens to support Iraq’s national football team in their crucial World Cup qualifying match against South Korea.

A statement from the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers confirmed that the prime minister instructed all government ministries, non-ministerial bodies, and official institutions to close early, giving employees the opportunity to watch and cheer for the national team.

Iraq will face South Korea at 2:00 p.m. local time in a key match for Group B of the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The game will take place at Yongin Mireu Stadium, with both teams tied on points but South Korea leading on goal difference.

Under coach Jesús Casas, Iraq has been preparing intensively, hoping to secure a win and strengthen their chances of advancing in the qualifiers.

Government offices in Iraq usually operate on varying schedules, depending on the ministry or institution, but today’s early closure allows broad public support for the national team.
