Recycling plant to be built in Erbil’s Soran district, processing 400 tons of waste daily

ERBIL — A new recycling plant will be established in the Soran Independent Administration in Erbil governorate, aimed at processing 400 tons of waste daily, according to officials. The project was announced on Monday and will cover an area of 12.3 acres.

Kordo Shaban, Director of Communications and Public Relations for the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism, told 964media that the plant will employ modern, environmentally sustainable techniques to handle waste from hospitals, households, and other sectors.

“The project, costing 24 billion dinars [approximately $15.7 million], will serve the districts of Soran, Mergasur, and Choman,” Shaban said, highlighting that the plant will play a vital role in addressing the region’s waste management issues.

The facility is expected to create 100 jobs, boosting local employment. It is scheduled for completion within 18 months.

Currently, the Soran Independent Administration produces 300 to 350 tons of waste each day, which is collected in central dumps and buried with soil. This method poses environmental hazards, including soil and groundwater contamination, as well as the release of harmful gases as waste decomposes. The new plant aims to mitigate these risks and improve public health in the region.
