Mosul Professor Leila Al-Mawla signs new book at Mosul book fair

MOSUL — Leila Al-Mawla, a university professor at Mosul University, signed her latest book, “Free Philosophy,” at the Mosul International Book Fair on Saturday. The book, her fourth work, is a collection of philosophical essays.

Al-Mawla, the only professor specializing in Greek philosophy at Mosul University, began her academic writings in 2019, publishing three books: “Studies in Greek Philosophy,” “The Philosophy of Law in Plato’s Work,” and “Aristotle’s Critique of Greek Constitutions.”

“Free Philosophy” comprises 40 essays covering topics such as politics, sociology, economics, law, and human development. It took Al-Mawla a year and a half to complete and is her first non-academic publication.

“I have three previous publications, which were academic books that I began writing in 2019. They discussed the Greek authorities and the separation of powers, the philosophy of Greek law according to Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato, the Greek political state, Plato’s Republic, and how life was in the ancient Greek society, as well as how our society lives within the fears that existed in the past,” Al-Mawla said in an interview with 964media.

She emphasized the challenges she faced due to the scarcity of sources, which often required translations from English to Arabic.

Al-Mawla completed her master’s degree in Greek philosophy at Kufa University in 2015 and earned her PhD in 2022. She also studied general philosophy at Mosul University, where she currently teaches.

The book signing was part of the nearly week-long Mosul International Book Fair, where several other local authors also launched new works.
