Iraq’s acting speaker warns of expanding conflict amid Israel-Hezbollah tensions, calls for urgent ‘Islamic summit’
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s acting speaker of parliament, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, issued a warning Monday evening about the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, cautioning that the war could spread further across the region. He also called for an urgent ‘Islamic summit’ to address the growing crisis.
Al-Mandalawi’s remarks followed a statement from Shia Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, who expressed solidarity with Lebanon in light of recent airstrikes and pager explosions. Al-Sistani urged for an end to the violence, calling on “the faithful to assist in alleviating their suffering and addressing their humanitarian needs.”
Full statement from Mohsen Al-Mandalawi’s office:
The Acting Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Mr. Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, condemned the brutal crimes and grave humanitarian violations committed by the Zionist killing machine, including the deliberate targeting of Lebanese civilians’ homes, which led to the martyrdom of hundreds of children, women, and elderly people, and the injury of thousands of unarmed innocents. He expressed Iraq’s solidarity, with its religious authority, government, leaders, and people, with the beloved people of Lebanon.
On Monday evening, Al-Mandalawi called on the government and humanitarian organizations to quickly respond to the appeal of the supreme religious authority (al-Marja’iyya), by immediately moving to aid the brothers in Lebanon, sending all necessary humanitarian, medical, and logistical assistance, in addition to supporting them with specialized personnel to help alleviate their suffering. He also suggested opening Iraqi hospitals to receive critical cases and providing the necessary assistance to accommodate those displaced due to these bloody acts.
The Acting Speaker warned of the malicious efforts by the leaders and army of the Zionist occupation to expand the scope of war and violations into other countries in the region. He stressed that the international community is required today to avoid double standards in responding to the terrible violations of international laws and conventions, calling for real and effective action to deter the leaders of the occupation and stop the aggression before the repercussions of these events affect all countries of the world. He also emphasized the need for an urgent Islamic summit to come up with effective recommendations that match the magnitude of the dangers facing Muslim populations, pointing out that the countries supporting this usurping entity are partners in the brutal crimes and in every drop of blood that has been spilled and continues to be shed to this day.
