'Robust and lasting relationship'

Iraq and Indonesia sign visa exemption agreement for diplomatic and service passport holders

NEWSROOM — On Sept. 23, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi signed a mutual visa exemption agreement for diplomatic and service passport holders.

According to a statement from Iraq’s Foreign Ministry, the visa exemption is based on the principle of reciprocity and seeks to enhance friendly relations. The two ministers also discussed facilitating easier entry for Iraqi and Indonesian citizens, with the goal of promoting greater bilateral engagement.

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry described the meeting as “productive,” noting that it covered various areas of bilateral cooperation, as well as global issues of common interest, including the situation in Palestine. The visa exemption agreement was highlighted as a significant step in solidifying the “robust and lasting relationship” between Iraq and Indonesia, which dates back to 1950, shortly after Indonesia gained independence.

The meeting concluded with a formal signing ceremony.

This agreement comes after a similar move in July, when Iraq and Turkey lifted visa requirements for citizens under the age of 15 and over the age of 50.
