Shelter for patients coming from outside Wasit

Charity campaign in Kut provides free housing, meals, and transportation for cancer patients

WASIT — Members of the “Yad Al-Awn” humanitarian charity campaign in Kut, Wasit province, have opened a modest house in the Shari Al-Naft area, south of the city, to provide free accommodation for cancer patients and their families. These patients, who come to the Cancer Center in Wasit from various provinces, require long-term treatment, often facing significant expenses.

The house offers shelter, food, and transportation throughout the patients’ treatment period. “The house is dedicated to cancer patients, particularly those coming from Baghdad, Nasiriyah, and Amarah to the Cancer Center in Kut,” said Sattar Al-Kinani, a campaign contributor, to 964media. “In coordination with the hospital, we receive families until their treatment is completed.”

Al-Kinani explained that cancer treatment often requires multiple sessions over a month or two, placing a heavy financial burden on many families. “That is why we offer this house to accommodate them during the treatment period, providing meals and transportation to and from the hospital,” he added.

The house was built entirely through donations, with even the land being donated by a philanthropist. The campaign manages ongoing expenses and transportation while overseeing the project.

A beneficiary from Nasiriyah, whose wife is undergoing chemotherapy at the Cancer Center in Kut, told 964media, “The hospital informed us about this humanitarian campaign, which provided us with accommodation for the entire duration of the treatment, including food, drinks, and transportation. This spared us costs I couldn’t afford due to my limited financial situation.”

Wasit is a governorate in central Iraq, with Kut as its capital. It borders Baghdad to the northwest, Diyala to the north, Babil to the west, and Maysan to the south.

Charity projects like this one are found across Iraq. In Samarra, Charity Kitchen provides meals to about 1,150 people daily, including underprivileged families, workers, orphanages, internally displaced persons, and students.

In Baghdad, the Shorba Khana restaurant in the Al-Adhamiyah area has grown from a modest street food initiative to one of the largest humanitarian projects in the area, offering daily meals to the needy alongside other charitable projects.

In Dhi Qar, the Majannan Foundation, dedicated to aiding orphans and impoverished families, has successfully built 98 homes across the governorate.
