Iraq’s justice minister discusses judicial agreement with U.S. ambassador

BAGHDAD, September 19 — Iraq’s Minister of Justice, Khalid Shwani, met with the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Alina L. Romanowski on Monday to discuss the signing of a legal agreement between the two countries, as well as the exchange of prisoners.

The Justice Ministry issued a statement, which said:

Minister of Justice, Khalid Shawani, received today, Monday, in his official office, the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, Ms. Alina Romanowski, and her accompanying delegation.

During the meeting, they reviewed bilateral relations between Baghdad and Washington, and ways to enhance them in a manner that serves the interests of both friendly nations, particularly in regards to the signing of an agreement in legal and judicial matters and the utilization of this agreement for the development and enhancement of the capabilities of the Ministry’s staff, as well as the exchange of prisoners.

Minister Shwani emphasized the importance of continuing joint cooperation and providing support to strengthen human rights and the justice sector, in accordance with the Ministry’s agenda and the government’s vision in this regard.

For her part, the U.S. Ambassador reaffirmed her country’s support for the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Justice through training and the provision of legal and judicial expertise.
