Targeting Tribal Mobilization Forces
Roadside bomb kills one, injures two in Salah Al-Din province
SALAH AL-DIN — A roadside bomb exploded near a joint checkpoint on the Beiji-Haditha road in Iraq’s Salah Al-Din province, targeting a unit of the Albu Nimr Tribal Mobilization Forces. The explosion resulted in the death of one member and left two others injured, according to a security source.
In the summer of 2014, the Albu Nimr tribe made a stand against an ISIS assault in the desert region of the Hit district, approximately 70 km west of Ramadi, as the group rapidly took over northern and western Iraq. Despite their efforts, the tribe was unable to hold their ground, leaving the remaining fighters vulnerable to ISIS retaliation. In one of Iraq’s most horrific massacres, the militants executed at least 400 men from the tribe.
The Tribal Mobilization militias, known as Hashd al-Asha’iri, are composed of fighters from local Sunni tribes. These forces primarily operate within their home regions and have played a significant role in the fight against ISIS, contributing to the security and stabilization of areas once they have been liberated.
