Worker dies after fall at Sulaymaniyah construction site

SULAYMANIYAH – A construction worker died Saturday after falling from the top floor of a residential project in Sulaymaniyah, officials said. The incident occurred Saturday afternoon at the Park 77 residential project, adjacent to the Sulaymaniyah Governorate building.

The worker, a 30-year-old father of two, suffered fatal injuries from the fall and was pronounced dead upon his body’s arrival at the Forensic Medicine Department in Sulaymaniyah for examination, according to Osman Zindani, head of the Construction Workers’ Union.

Zindani told 964media that an investigation into the fall’s cause is underway.

This death marks the 11th construction fatality in Sulaymaniyah this year. It follows an incident where another worker died from injuries sustained in a fall at a different housing project earlier this week.

From January to April 28, the Kurdistan Construction Workers’ Organization reported 19 worker deaths across the Kurdistan Region and one in Kirkuk Governorate, with the causes ranging from electrocution and building collapses to falls from heights and machinery-related incidents.

The report highlighted a concerning trend of workplace fatalities attributed to inadequate safety standards and insufficient training on protective measures. The Kurdistan Workers’ Union noted an increase in worker fatalities, with 53 deaths in 2023, including 39 local workers and 14 foreign nationals, up from 41 in 2022.
