Iraq’s Ayman Hussein undergoes surgery after injury in match against Oman

BAGHDAD — Iraq striker Ayman Hussein has undergone surgery in Kuwait after suffering a chest injury during a match against Oman, the Iraqi Football Association announced Friday.

Hussein, who scored the only goal in Iraq’s 1-0 victory over Oman in Basra on Thursday, sustained a rib injury during the match, which led to internal bleeding. He was later transferred to Kuwait for medical treatment.

Hussein, Iraq’s leading scorer, helped secure the win for his team in the first round of Group B of the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to local reports, Hussein was injured after a hard collision to his ribs but continued playing until the 84th minute when he requested a substitution due to the pain.

It is unclear how long Hussein will be sidelined.
