Fishing and swimming prohibited
100,000 carp fingerlings released into Erbil’s Gomespan Dam
ERBIL — The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Agriculture has delivered 100,000 carp fingerlings to the Gomespan Dam in Erbil’s Pir Mam district, where fishing and swimming activities are strictly prohibited, local authorities said Saturday.
Hamid Ismail Mohammed, district commissioner (qaymaqam) of Pir Mam, oversaw the release of the fingerlings and emphasized that this marks the first delivery of such a consignment to the dam. “We have placed a clear directive near the dam, prohibiting all forms of fishing and swimming activities. Anyone caught engaging in these activities will face legal consequences,” Mohammed told 964media.
In addition to the Gomespan Dam, plans are underway to release more fingerlings into the nearby Bastura Dam, with similar restrictions on fishing and swimming. Mohammed reiterated that warnings have been issued to the public for both areas.
Although there is no permanent security team assigned to monitor the dams, the district commissioner assured, “We will take immediate legal action against anyone found violating these regulations.”
The Gomespan Dam stands 70 meters high and stretches 512 meters long, with a capacity to hold 115 million cubic meters of rainwater. Once fully operational, it will be the largest dam in Erbil and the third-largest in the Kurdistan Region, following the Dukan and Darbandikhan dams.
The Bastura Dam, meanwhile, stands 32 meters high and extends 670 meters long, with a water retention capacity of 20 million cubic meters.
