Iraqi foreign minister urges U.S. action on frozen Iranian funds

BAGHDAD – Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein pressed U.S. Under Secretary of State for Management and Political Affairs John Bass for a swift resolution regarding frozen Iranian funds during a meeting in Washington. Hussein emphasized the importance of enhancing regional financial stability through this resolution.

The discussions also addressed Iraq’s concerns with dollar transactions, exacerbated by recent fluctuations where $1 surpassed 1,500 Iraqi dinars last week after months of stability below this rate.

The two officials also discussed economic cooperation between the United States and Iraq, with Hussein emphasizing the importance of bolstering Iraq’s financial and banking sectors to stabilize the economy and foster sustainable growth.

Regional tensions, particularly in Gaza and southern Lebanon, were also on the agenda. Hussein called for increased international efforts to ease tensions and achieve peace in the region.

Recent months have seen heightened hostilities in southern Lebanon between Hezbollah and Israel, leading to frequent cross-border incidents. Statements from Iraqi militias expressing readiness to support Hezbollah against Israel and the United States have raised concerns in Iraq, as the government fears potential escalation between Israel and Hezbollah could drag Iraq into the conflict.
