Calls for internal reforms in Iraq

Labor Party win won’t alter UK’s Middle East policy, says British ambassador

NAJAF – British Ambassador to Iraq Stephen Hitchen stated on Wednesday that the recent victory of the Labour Party in the UK will not alter British foreign policy in the Middle East.

Speaking at an event by Al-Rafidain Center for Dialogue in Najaf, Hithen said that while British companies are open to operating in Iraq, they are independent and cannot be compelled to invest in Iraq. He discussed investment opportunities, particularly in energy projects, with Najaf Governor Yusef Kenawi, noting that British businesses seek assurances for the protection of foreign investments.

The British ambassador highlighted Iraq’s economic challenges and emphasized the need for reforms amid declining oil prices and a growing population. Hitchen also stressed the need to revitalize the private sector, and enhancing banking and investment sectors. He warned that Iraq’s population is expected to reach 70 million by 2040, posing an existential threat amid anticipated declines in oil prices.

Hitchen acknowledged improvements in Iraq’s security but highlighted ongoing vulnerabilities such as armed militias.

Addressing the press in Arabic, he expressed his admiration for Shia Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani during his first visit to Najaf.
