Baghdad residents protest electricity supply issues
BAGHDAD — Residents of the Al-Zaafaraniya area in Baghdad renewed their protests near the town’s central roundabout on Thursday evening, voicing frustration over the deteriorating electricity supply. The protesters called for an increase in supply hours amid the peak of summer.
Protesters criticized the recent visit by the minister of electricity, stating it did not lead to any improvements in their electricity supply.
“It has been over a month since the electricity situation worsened in the area without any solution, despite the minister’s visit,” a protester told 964media. “We were hopeful when the minister visited Al-Zaafaraniya, but the situation has only gotten worse. Repairs that used to take a day now take seven days.”
Residents complained about the instability of the power supply, with outages lasting four hours followed by intermittent two-hour supplies. “Amperes cost 17,000 dinars ($13), and my salary is 400,000 dinars ($305). I have rent and sick family members to care for. How can I manage my salary?” one resident asked.
