Win over Duhok in Baghdad

Al-Shorta SC clinches league championship on penultimate day

BAGHDAD — Al-Shorta secured the Iraq Stars League title for the third consecutive season and the seventh in its history with a 1-0 victory over Duhok on Thursday in the 37th and penultimate round of fixtures.

This win came as their main rival, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, stumbled to a 1-1 draw against Al-Qasim.

Al-Shorta owes their victory at the International Stadium in Baghdad to Abdelmajid Abu Bakr, who scored the match’s only goal in the 51st minute. This result pushed Al-Shorta’s points tally to 84, five points clear of Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya with one game remaining.

Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya – who played with ten men from the 66th minute after international defender Saad Natiq received a red card – initially took the lead against Al-Qasim through a goal by Falah Abdelkarim in the 84th minute, but Hussein Jabbar equalized in the 97th minute.

Elsewhere, Al-Zawraa defeated Al-Naft 3-1, securing third place with 75 points.
