Baghdad residents swap tires as summer heat surges

Baghdad — As Baghdad braces for intense summer temperatures, many residents are replacing their tires to cope with the harsh conditions, with a notable trend toward more affordable Chinese brands.

Louay Mohammed, a local driver, shared his experience with 964media: “In summer, we struggle with tires due to the extreme heat. I had to replace a cracked tire on Al-Amil’s industrial street, where prices are more reasonable.”

On the first day of summer, temperatures in eight southern Iraqi provinces exceeded 50 degrees Celsius, according to the Iraqi Meteorological Agency.

Ayman Hussein, a tire shop owner, pointed out the necessity for specific types of tires in summer: “In summer, tires expand and suffer more due to high temperatures. We generally recommend larger, smoother tread tires for better durability, especially given Baghdad’s challenging road conditions.”

Diaa Sabah, assistant manager at the Tiremall branch in Baghdad, emphasized the importance of selecting the right tire for the season, noting the popularity of Chinese tires due to their cost-effectiveness. “For high temperatures, a tire with a Treadwear rating of 400 or above is most suitable,” Sabah said. “However, some customers prefer Chinese tires for their affordability, despite concerns over their safety and reliability.”
