Rosy starling bird reappears in Penjwen after decade-long absence

PENJWEN — The rosy starling, known scientifically as Pastor roseus, has returned to the Penjwen district of Sulaymaniyah after a lengthy absence, local experts reported.

According to Korsh Ararat, project manager at the Iraq Nature Organization for Bird Protection, a substantial population of these birds has recently nested in the Sharbazher and Penjwen areas. “These birds migrate based on the suitability of the environment, preferring dense forest areas for nesting,” Ararat told 964media.

He noted that the rosy starlings have a unique ability to resist grasshoppers, which have proliferated in the region this year. “Their presence benefits local farmers by protecting agricultural produce from grasshopper damage,” Ararat added.

Rebwar Kemal, president of the Mlakawa Organization for Environmental Protection in Penjwen, emphasized the significance of their return. “This bird has not been seen in Penjwen in this manner for more than ten years,” Kemal said. “Although their sightings were very rare over the past decade, this year they have reappeared and established nests in Penjwen.”
