Kurdish farmers cultivate successful Dutch potato variety

DUHOK – Farmers in the Nawkur Plain of Duhok province’s Bardarash district have successfully cultivated the Spectra potato variety imported from the Netherlands.

Nechirvan Hazem Artushi, head of the Duhok branch of Kurdistan’s Agricultural Engineers Syndicate, told 964media that the plain contributes 450,000 tons of potatoes annually, accounting for 70 percent of the Kurdistan Region’s total potato production.

According to Artushi, the Spectra potato is well-suited to the climate of Duhok and is distinguished by its appealing appearance and unique taste.

“The Spectra potato underwent rigorous testing over four years in Duhok, leading to its adoption as a new variety in the region,” Artushi stated.

In recent years, Kurdistan’s potato exports, including the Spectra variety, have seen significant demand from countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Azerbaijan, and various Iraqi provinces, underscoring its growing popularity and economic importance.
