Damage to local tree

Halabja environment department acts against generator owner

HALABJA — The Environment Department in Halabja is taking steps to address an issue with a private generator owner whose negligence, they say, has led to the partial drying out of a nearby tree.

Located in the Kani Qulke neighborhood, the generator was the focus of an inspection by a departmental committee.

Sarhang Abdulrahman, head of the Halabja Environment Department, told 964media that they have requested the generator owner to come in for an investigation regarding the tree’s deteriorating condition, attributed to the smoke from the generator.

“If the tree can recover and turn green again, as it is not completely dry, the owner will be required to maintain it under supervision. If it is beyond recovery, he must replace it with a new tree,” Abdulrahman said.

The department previously issued several guidelines urging generator owners to comply with environmental standards.

“This particular owner had previously been warned to prevent the tree from drying out. He ignored these warnings, which constitutes an environmental violation,” Abdulrahman noted.

The Kurdistan Region heavily relies on local generators to plug gaps in grid electricity, that, while bridging the power supply shortfall, contribute significantly to pollution, exacerbating environmental and public health concerns.
