New release after eight-year hiatus
Baghdad panel discusses renowned Iraqi artist Kadim Al Sahir’s latest album
BAGHDAD — A unique art symposium titled “Lovers of the Caesar” was held in Baghdad to explore Kadim Al Sahir’s latest work, “With Love.” The album, marking his return to music composition after a long break, was the subject of a detailed critique by a panel of experts at the Iraqi Artists Syndicate.
Kadim Al Sahir is an acclaimed Iraqi singer, songwriter, and composer born in Mosul. He is widely recognized for blending traditional Middle Eastern melodies with modern arrangements, earning him the title “Caesar of Arabic Song” due to his profound impact on Arabic music.
Music critic Samer Mishal noted the emotional resonance of the album’s melodies, likely crafted during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The loss of loved ones during the pandemic has clearly influenced the emotional depth of this album,” Mishal commented.
The symposium offered an in-depth analysis of the musical and compositional techniques in Al Sahir’s new album, which features 13 sung poems. These compositions include lyrics by renowned poets such as the late Nizar Qabbani and Karim Al Iraqi, alongside contributions from Dawood Al Ghanam and several young Arab poets.
Throughout his career, Kadim Al Sahir has released numerous hit albums, collaborated with international artists like Sarah Brightman and Lenny Kravitz, and performed at sold-out concerts worldwide. His work is noted for its poetic lyrics and romantic style, which resonate with a broad audience.
Speaking to 964media, Mishal remarked on the rarity of such events in Iraq. “It is unprecedented to hold a symposium to discuss a music album here. The music’s depth and unusual compositions stand out compared to Al Sahir’s previous works, which included more classical melodies and dance rhythms.”
The album emerges after an eight-year hiatus during which Al Sahir performed only previously released songs at concerts. This latest work delves into themes of loss and mourning, reflecting the personal losses Al Sahir experienced, including the deaths of his ex-wife, the poet Karim Al Iraqi, and the music arranger Fathallah Ahmed.
Hashim Hassan shared his personal insights into the album’s somber tones. “The sorrow felt throughout the album was composed amidst the COVID-19 crisis, a time marked by significant personal loss. Yet, with each listening, we uncover new and beautiful layers in the music,” he said.
Kareem Al Rassam, President of the Iraqi Musicians Association, suggested the album mirrors Al Sahir’s deep yearning for his homeland, which also manifests in the album’s prevalent melancholic mood.
Ahmed Nasser, a spokesperson for the association, praised Al Sahir’s enduring influence. “Kadim has consistently infused our lives with love through his music. He returns to his audience with a profound message of patience and presents his greatest artistic treasure,” Nasser said.
In addition to his musical achievements, Al Sahir has used his platform for humanitarian efforts, serving as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and participating in various charity initiatives.
