After 42 years in education
Retired teacher finds new purpose in Diyala orchard
DIYALA – Mustafa Ibrahim Jawad toils under the blistering summer sun, clearing a waterway with a shovel in his orchard. Despite the heat, he relishes his retirement in the Zanboura village of Diyala province, central Iraq, overlooking the mighty Tigris River.
After four decades of teaching in Diyala’s Al-Khalis district, Jawad has found renewed purpose among his vineyards, palms, and apple trees. “I spent my life in education, serving about 42 years, fostering a generation raised on morals, manners, and love for others,” he told 964media.
For Jawad, both farming and teaching require care and dedication. He enjoys the tangible rewards of his labor in the orchard. “It gives me great joy when I enter the orchard and see the fruits, inhale the smell of trees, and sip a cup of tea here with friends,” he said.
Zanboura, known for its agricultural character, has been supported by state-distributed irrigation pumps since 1980. These pumps are still in use today, helping the village produce abundant crops that not only suffice for the area but are also exported to Al-Khalis and beyond.
Jawad takes pride in his new life, finding joy in seeing his former students hold significant positions or simply having learned to read and write. He feels peace and satisfaction knowing he has served both his community and his trees. He often wakes up early or waters the crops at night to ensure their health.
“Previously, my school bag contained all teaching aids, but now my car is packed with farming tools and materials,” Jawad said, reflecting on his fulfilling transition from teacher to farmer.
