Karbala sculptor finds inspiration in family roots

KARBALA — Wisam Al-Dubouni, a sculptor from Karbala, has recounted how his family’s artistic roots and early experiences with natural clay shaped his career, culminating in creations like the “Political Prisoner” statue, a reflection of his personal history.

Al-Dubouni began experimenting with clay from the Euphrates near his hometown of Hindiyah, motivated by his family’s deep connection to the arts. “I was born in Hindiyah to a family deeply rooted in the fine arts, which significantly impacted me,” Al-Dubouni told 964media. “Sculpture became my passion, beginning my experiments before even entering elementary school.”

His early works caught the attention of local leaders. “In elementary school, I participated in a school art exhibition attended by the governor, who praised my work. The school later honored me, reinforcing my commitment to this path,” he said.

Al-Dubouni, influenced by renowned Iraqi artist Jawad Salim, draws inspiration at night, sketching preliminary forms and refining them into final pieces. “I struggle to sleep easily,” he says.

He has held four solo exhibitions and participated in numerous festivals and exhibitions both locally and internationally.

Despite early challenges, Al-Dubouni is committed to supporting emerging artists. “Accessing information was incredibly difficult back then, which is why I now actively engage with those seeking knowledge and skills,” he explained.

Al-Dubouni also dreams of enhancing Karbala’s streets with art that reflects its heritage. “If financially able, I would obtain the necessary approvals and create many works to adorn the city’s streets,” he added.

Reflecting on his works, he holds a special affection for the “Political Prisoner” piece, inspired by his childhood visits to his imprisoned father. This piece earned second place in an Iraqi competition, a significant achievement against his college professors.
