Ghammas residents protest over detoriating electricity supply
DIWANIYAH – Dozens of residents from Ghammas, located southwest of Diwaniyah, rallied Saturday in front of the local electricity directorate to protest the inadequate power supply. The demonstrators called for the implementation of an agricultural electricity program and an extension of the hours of power availability.
The protesters threatened to intensify their actions to include shutting down roads and government buildings if their demands remain unaddressed following the Eid Al-Adha holiday.
Hassan Diwan, head of the protest’s coordination committee, emphasized the peaceful nature of the demonstration. “We held a peaceful demonstration today in front of the Ghammas electricity building. After Eid, we plan to escalate our protests and close down offices and roads if our demands are not met,” Diwan told 964media.
Ward Al-Yasari, another committee member, expressed gratitude to the community for its support and urged continued advocacy. “We extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the residents of Ghammas. We urge you to continue demanding your legitimate rights transparently and respectfully,” Al-Yasari said. He noted that, unlike other districts, Ghammas still lacks its own police directorate and clear sub-district divisions.
