Body of boy, aged 13, recovered from Choman river
CHOMAN — The body of a 13-year-old boy who drowned in the Nawpirdan River within the Choman district has been recovered.
Rawand Hawdiani, a spokesperson for Soran Civil Defense, confirmed to 964media that the body had been found.
The recovery occurred at 11:15 a.m. “The body is currently at Choman Hospital and will later be transferred to Soran Forensic Medicine,” said Hawdiani.
According to the Civil Defense spokesperson, the body had been in the water for approximately 20 hours before being recovered by rescue teams.
Last night, attempts to find his body were unsuccessful due to high water levels and strong currents.
On the evening of Thursday, the boy drowned in the Nawpirdan River in Choman. The spokesperson explained that the boy, who was with his father, attempted to cross the river but fell in along with his father. The father was rescued, but the boy was swept away by the current.
The incident highlights a broader issue of water safety in the region. According to the Kurdistan Region’s Civil Defense Directorate, 26 people have drowned in the last five months. The previous year saw over 100 drownings, although civil defense teams were able to rescue nearly 70 individuals. This marks an increase from the year before, which recorded 77 drownings.
