Nine-day search concludes

Body of missing mullah found in Greater Zab

BARDARASH — The body of a 68-year-old mullah from Kharouk village in the Bardarash district was discovered today in the Greater Zab River, ending a nine-day search. The local religious figure had been missing since May 24 after he went fishing and did not return.

Local villagers, along with Civil Defense teams, diving teams, and rescue personnel from nearby cities including Kalak, Khabat, and Akre, were involved in the extensive search. The discovery was made by residents of the Kalak subdistrict near the Kalak Bridge.

Ibrahim Fariq, head of the Akre Civil Defense, detailed the recovery efforts: “The body of the religious man was found near the Kalak Bridge by local residents. The diving team from Khabat then retrieved the body and handed it over to the Akre Civil Defense team.”

Abdulstar Khidr, one of the individuals who located the body, shared his account with 964media, saying, “Two young men informed us that a body was stuck in the Kalak River. When we reached the location, we saw that it was the body of the religious man from Kharouk, and he had drowned.”

The incident highlights a broader issue of water safety in the region. According to the Kurdistan Region’s Civil Defense Directorate, 26 people have drowned in the last five months. The previous year saw over 100 drownings, although civil defense teams were able to rescue nearly 70 individuals. This marks an increase from the year before, which recorded 77 drownings.
