Duhok village fully adopts solar power, eliminates generators

BARDARASH — The village of Tirbaspi in the Bardarash area of Duhok has transitioned entirely to solar power, with all households now using the sun’s energy for electricity. This shift eliminates the need for traditional private-owned generators, which were often unreliable and required frequent maintenance.

Jalal Issa Amo, the village mukhtar, said the community decided collectively to abandon generators. “We chose to free ourselves from the disruptions of generator-based electricity and the shortage of national power supply by adopting solar energy. Now, all households benefit from continuous and reliable solar power,” Amo told 964media.

Residents report that they now receive five to six hours of national power daily, an increase from the two hours or less in previous months. Electricity availability typically decreases in winter and summer due to higher demand, officials said.

Amo added that the village has 35 families, totaling about 220 residents, all of whom have installed solar power systems on their rooftops.

Previously, their generators would constantly break down and require repairs. Now, they have their own stable and efficient power supply, Amo said.

The conventional generators are known for releasing harmful emissions into the atmosphere, contributing to air pollution and climate change. Additionally, the noise and the potential for soil and water contamination from fuel spills pose further environmental and health risks.

The cost of installing these solar power systems ranges from $1,500 to $2,000 per household.

The system uses technology to convert sunlight into electricity through photovoltaic panels. Beyond the manufacturing process, it emits no pollutants once installed and reduces dependence on fossil fuels.
