Forests cover 2.5 million dunams

Kurdistan region plants 600,000 trees to increase forested areas

ERBIL, September 4 — Some 600,000 trees have been planted across the Kurdistan region’s forests since the beginning of 2023, according to an official from the regional government’s Ministry of Agriculture.

Halkawt Abdulrahman, Director of Horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture, told 964: “We have planted more than 600,000 trees across the region since the beginning of 2023 with the goal of increasing forest area and green spaces, which are priorities for the Ministry of Agriculture.”

“The forested area in the region is 2.5 million dunams, with 6 million dunams of arable land and 6 million dunams of cultivated land. These forests are of great importance to Kurdistan and its environment, and the Ministry of Agriculture takes them very seriously,” Abdulrahman stated.
