Locals and tourists gather at the ancient citadel

Erbil celebrates Newroz with bonfire lighting

ERBIL – As darkness fell, dozens of youths carrying torches ascended to the ancient Erbil citadel to ignite the Newroz bonfire, coinciding with the firing of the iftar cannon, a customary practice during Ramadan evenings in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

Coinciding with the spring equinox, Newroz falls on March 21st, marking the start of the Kurdish New Year.

964media’s cameras captured scenes from the elaborate fire-lighting ceremony for Newroz and the Kurdish New Year in Erbil, near the ancient citadel, drawing a large crowd of locals and tourists.

Men and women participated in the traditional ritual by carrying torches, accompanied by fireworks and traditional music. Additionally, a bustling Ramadan bazaar took place at the renowned “Fountains” park by the citadel, enhancing the festive ambiance.

Unlike in the past, when the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) organized official Newroz festivities in Erbil, this year the KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and foreign dignitaries attended the Newroz event in Akre, a mountainous town located 65km north of Erbil.
