Iraqi court issues death sentences for five accused of trafficking Captagon in Samawah
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Central Criminal Court sentenced five people, including three foreign nationals, to death on Wednesday for trafficking Captagon in Muthanna governorate.
The court said the individuals were convicted of involvement in a drug smuggling ring operating in Muthanna’s provincial capital, Samawah, with activities extending to neighboring countries. No further details about the nationalities of the foreign convicts were provided.
The sentences were handed down under Article 27/1 of the Drug and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 50 of 2017, referencing Articles 47, 48, and 49 of the Penal Code, according to a statement from the Supreme Judicial Council’s press office.
Captagon, a stimulant pill containing amphetamine, has become a growing concern in the Middle East, with Iraq being a key transit country for the drug.
